Many Injured In Akwa Ibom Ward Congress
Several people were reportedly injured on Saturday, 1 November, 2014 when two factions of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, from Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom confronted each other during a ward congress. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Gabriel Ochong, informed that no one was killed during the clash. “I don’t think there was any person that died. I was in Four Lane myself,” Ochong said. He added: “The problem started when two factions from Eastern Obolo used wood to hit one another. “The injured were bleeding and the police had to take them to hospital. “If anything had happened to anyone of them, the police who took them to the hospital would have informed me. “However, at the time I left my house for that place, I was even told that two people had been killed, only for me to get there and found out that the people who engaged themselves in brawl only sustained injury. “No position is worth the life of any Nigeria, let the election be peaceful so that the will of people will prevail.” It would be recalled that some leaders of the PDP in Awka had on Friday rejected the decision of the party to zone the governorship ticket of Akwa Ibom State to Eket in the 2015 general elections. Former governor, Victor Attah and Board of Trustees member, Don Etiebet, rejected the decision of the state chapter of the ruling party and urged the national leadership of the party to allow internal democracy to prevail in choosing the flag-bearer of the party for the February 2015 governorship elections. Addressing a news conference in Abuja, the two party chieftains said that the absence of a level playing field might affect the fortunes of the party in the 2015 elections. However, it is unclear if the latest crisis is related to the zoning of candidate by the PDP in the state.
